¿ Por qué Español ?
This year I would like to continue in my goal to speak Spanish more fluently, gain a better understanding of the language and develop my knowledge of Spanish culture. Spanish is an important language in this country and all of North and South America, and one that I would like to master. My interests in foreign travel as well as my career interests would be furthered by being bi-lingual. While I intend to learn as much Spanish as possible in high school, I would like to travel to Spanish speaking countries afterwards to truly become fluent in the language. Gaining a strong base of Spanish this year will be very helpful for this longer-term goal. Regardless of what career I ultimately choose, I also believe that furthering my fluency in Spanish can only be a positive.
More importantly, however, is that learning another language is key to understanding other cultures and given the globalization of the culture, I would like to be more immersed in another culture. In classes I tend to zone out, but since some of the class is in a foreign language I must stay focused. Many amazing countries around the world are Spanish speaking. Knowing at least some Spanish will be helpful for when I travel to these places. I can learn basic Spanish in high school. From there I can continue my Spanish learning by traveling and getting to know people in Spanish speaking countries and mastering the language. Knowing Spanish will be a big advantage for me in my future career, whatever it may be. Having knowledge of Spanish will make my resume more appealing when applying for a job. For example, “recruiters in North America overwhelmingly choose Spanish (79 percent), greatly surpassing French (43 percent) and Mandarin Chinese (30 percent)” (Bhattacharjee, “Why Bilinguals Are Smarter”). I am excited to greatly improve my Spanish skills, and enjoy a fun class with amazing projects. All in all I am very interested and excited for what Spanish II has to offer me this year.
