Why I chose Animas High School
Middle school had left me a bit unenthusiastic about attending high school and I didn't relish the prospect of selecting a school. After I spent half of a day shadowing a student at Animas High School, my thoughts were spinning with new possibilities. I was awed and possessed by the students' sense of community and the school's approach to education. Before shadowing at Animas I had never imagined enjoying sitting in a classroom and being engaged. The school's project based learning approach meshed well with how I personally learn focusing on connecting ideas and concepts as opposed to more rote learning. Also, unlike other schools that I have attended, I felt so welcomed and engaged by the whole student body and the teachers that I had come across.
Before I attended Animas, school days felt like never ending torture from boredom and an exercise in watching the clock all day. At Animas, I feel compelled to share my thoughts and ideas with all of my peers and I truly enjoy participating and engaging in my classes. Since our lessons are interactive seminars and project based, I find that I am much more interested in what is being taught. I've also learned that projects at Animas are a great way to prove and explore my knowledge on any particular topic. The teacher-student relationships are another part of Animas that I really love, something that I have not experienced anywhere else. I feel very comfortable and cared for by my teachers. Anytime of the school day, I can approach them to ask questions or to advocate for myself. Animas has helped me to mature as a student and to take more responsibility for my education. I really value figuring out how to balance my time and having an opportunity to be creative and free in my education.
Apart from academics, Animas draws me in socially with a sense of community and the feeling that we all support each other. In the past, I have found the school environment to be more divisive and an unwelcome distraction. I believe that a comfortable and safe learning environment is key for any student to excel in school and Animas delivers on that. At Animas from the minute I shadowed, I felt very free to be myself and I felt appreciated by the other students. Part of Animas' success comes from the general understanding throughout the school that we are to respect and support one another including the teachers.
I have never been so proud to be a part of something. Animas helps me to realize that I am part of a much bigger picture and it pushes me academically and socially. I am so thankful that I have an opportunity to attend Animas as every day is exciting, thought provoking, and an opportunity to be appreciated and to appreciate others.
